How to clean your silver using toothpaste

Today, I’m going to show you a simple way to clean your silver right at home… using something you already have in your bathroom: toothpaste! That’s right! In just a few minutes, you can get your silver jewelry or silverware looking as good as new.

So let’s get started.

Before we start, here’s what you’ll need:

items you need to clean silver at home
  • Non-gel toothpaste
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush or a soft cloth
  • Lukewarm water
  • A bowl or sink – (try to use a non-metallic bowl – glass, ceramic or plastic)
  • A microfiber cloth or soft towel for drying
  • And some cotton swabs for those intricate designs or hard-to-reach spots.

Now, before we start with the cleaning process, there are a few important precautions to keep in mind –

First, make sure you’re using non-gel, non-whitening toothpaste. Whitening toothpaste can be too abrasive for silver and might leave scratches. We also want to avoid toothpaste that contains harsh chemicals or microbeads.

Also, if you’re dealing with any antique or super valuable, irreplaceable heirloom silver items, I would recommend using a professional cleaner instead, just to be safe.

And always—always—test the toothpaste on a small, hidden area of your silver before going all-in, just to be sure it won’t cause any damage.

Alright! Now that we’ve got everything ready and we know what to watch out for, let’s get into the cleaning process. Follow these simple steps.

First, rinse your silver under lukewarm water to remove any dust or dirt. This helps to avoid scratching the silver when we start scrubbing.

Next, apply a small amount of toothpaste onto your toothbrush, or directly onto the silver. You only need a little bit, like this.

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, gently scrub the toothpaste into the tarnished areas. You want to use circular motions to evenly clean the surface.

If your silver has small crevices or intricate designs, like this, use a cotton swab to get into those tight spots without damaging the details.

For heavier tarnish, you can let the toothpaste sit for a few minutes. But don’t leave it for too long, especially on delicate silver. 5 to 7 minutes should be more than enough.

Now, rinse the toothpaste off completely with lukewarm water. Make sure all of the toothpaste is washed away, so it doesn’t dry on the surface.

Finally, pat the silver dry with a soft microfiber cloth, and give it a little buff to bring out that beautiful shine.

Look at that! It’s like new!

And, if your silver is heavily tarnished, don’t hesitate to repeat the process.
